From the Giza Pyramids to the Grand Egyptian Museum

Can you walk from the pyramids to the Grand Egyptian Museum? 1.9 km in a straight line, but no walking route is published: 2.8 to 5.5 km by road. Getting there from Cairo too.

Updated November 2026

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands just north of the Giza pyramids, about 1.9 km from the Great Pyramid in a straight line. Walking between them is not the way to plan it: the museum publishes no walking route, only directions by car. By road it is 2.8 km from the museum to the Mena House side of the plateau and 5.5 km to the plateau visitor centre, a short drive by taxi or tour van.

Road distances from the museum’s entrance; straight lines from the museum. Cairo traffic sets the real driving time.

The plateau has more than one way in, on the Mena House side and at the visitor centre to the south-west, and the area ticket is EGP 700 for a foreign adult, with the Great Pyramid’s interior EGP 1,000 more (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, checked November 2026). The ministry’s own pages give different opening times for the plateau, so check its site for the day you go.

On a tour, the drive is done for you

The simplest way to see both is a day that drives you from one to the other. The tour in the calendar below, OceanAir Travel’s Cairo: Grand Egyptian Museum, Pyramids, Sphinx Tour & Lunch, does the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre first, then drives on to the museum for two hours, with hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza and both entry tickets. It shows from $97 on promotion, usually $126 (checked November 2026), each for two adults on the shared tour; one adult pays US$120 (12 November, checked November 2026).

Hotels further out, Cairo Airport, Heliopolis, Nasr City and New Cairo among them, are an add-on at checkout. The museum and Pyramids tour, or the museum alone? compares this day with the other tours.

From central Cairo and the airport

From central Cairo to the Grand Egyptian Museum: 16.6 km by road from Tahrir Square, 37.6 km from Cairo International Airport.

From Tahrir Square in central Cairo the museum is 16.6 km by road, across the Nile and out along the roads to Giza; from Cairo International Airport it is 37.6 km. The museum says it can be reached by car, tour bus or public transport, but its own pages give metro and bus details as still to come (checked November 2026), so for now plan on a taxi, a car or a tour.

By car, the museum’s FAQ gives three approaches, all ending at the parking entrance on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, heading towards Remaya Square: by the 26th of July corridor, or by the Ring Road from the east or the west. Parking on site is paid, and the museum asks visitors to share cars where they can, as it can fill at busy times.

Seeing both on your own takes some planning: a plateau ticket bought at the gates, a museum ticket booked online for an entry time, and a car between the two. If you go it alone, a Wednesday or Saturday helps, with the plateau by day and the museum open until 21:00 (hours and rules).
