Is Tutankhamun in the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Yes: every Grand Egyptian Museum ticket includes the Tutankhamun Galleries, with the golden mask, throne and outer coffin. Which tours name them, and the GEM vs the old museum.

Updated November 2026

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum’s admission ticket includes the Tutankhamun Galleries (Grand Egyptian Museum, checked November 2026), and the museum lists the golden burial mask of Tutankhamun, his golden throne, the royal diadem and his outer coffin among the objects of that collection. If the galleries are the reason you are going, the surest way in is a ticket that names them, like the one in the calendar below: the Cairo: Entry Ticket to Grand Egyptian Museum on GetYourGuide, from $35 (checked November 2026), with the main galleries, the Tutankhamun galleries and the solar boat museum at your own pace.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The ticket is sold by GetYourGuide Tours & Tickets GmbH and cannot be refunded; it has no guide and no transport. The museum’s own tickets, EGP 1,830 for a foreign adult, include the same galleries (Grand Egyptian Museum tickets).

What the museum lists in the Tutankhamun Galleries

The museum’s collection pages put these objects in the Tutankhamun Galleries:

  • The golden burial mask, of solid gold, found over the head and shoulders of Tutankhamun’s mummified remains. The museum shows it as one of the highlights of the galleries.
  • The golden throne and the royal diadem, which was hidden under the mask, round the king’s head.
  • The outer coffin, the largest of the three coffins found inside his sarcophagus: wood covered in plaster, linen and gold foil, the face and hands in thicker sheet gold, 223.5 cm long.

From the Grand Egyptian Museum’s collection pages, read November 2026.

The galleries carry camera restrictions of their own, so follow the signs and the staff once inside; flash is not allowed anywhere in the museum.

Which tours name the Tutankhamun Galleries

On a guided visit the guide picks the route, and not every tour names the Tutankhamun Galleries in its route. Before you book a tour for them, read its itinerary.

The museum’s own Guided Tour Ticket is the clearest guided option on this point: its standard route of about two hours covers the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs and the Main Galleries, in English or Arabic, for EGP 2,330 for a foreign adult (Grand Egyptian Museum, checked November 2026). On a private or pyramids-and-museum tour, ask the operator after booking to include the galleries in the two hours.

The Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum?

Map of Cairo and Giza: the Grand Egyptian Museum beside the Giza pyramids plateau, Tahrir Square in central Cairo 16.6 km by road from the museum, and Cairo International Airport 37.6 km by road
The Grand Egyptian Museum on the Giza side, and Tahrir Square, home of the Egyptian Museum, in central Cairo: 16.6 km apart by road.

They are two museums. The Grand Egyptian Museum stands beside the Giza plateau on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road; the Egyptian Museum, the older one, is on Tahrir Square in central Cairo, 16.6 km away by road. Each has its own ticket.

The difference matters on the day trips from the Red Sea resorts, which sell the museum as an option: the flights from Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh offer the old Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum, at different prices. The Tutankhamun objects listed above are on the Grand Egyptian Museum’s collection pages, so if they are the reason for the trip, pick the option with the Grand Egyptian Museum in its name (the museum and Pyramids tour, or the museum alone? has the option prices).

His tomb is in Luxor

Tutankhamun was buried in tomb KV62 in the Valley of the Kings, on the west bank at Luxor, where Howard Carter found it in 1922 (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities). The tomb is a separate visit, far to the south, with its own ticket at the ministry: EGP 700 for a foreign adult (checked November 2026). The museum’s collection pages list the mask that lay over his mummy, and the coffins; they do not list the mummy itself.
