How Long Do You Need at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Allow at least two hours inside the Grand Egyptian Museum: the museum's own guided tour takes about two. What fits in two hours, a half day or a full day with the pyramids.

Updated November 2026

Allow at least two hours inside the Grand Egyptian Museum. The museum’s own guided tour takes about two hours over the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs and the Main Galleries (Grand Egyptian Museum, checked November 2026), and most guided visits give it about the same. On your own you can stay longer: the entry time on your ticket only says when you go in. With a guide, two hours fits into a single day with the pyramids, which is what the tour below does: OceanAir Travel’s Cairo: Grand Egyptian Museum, Pyramids, Sphinx Tour & Lunch, from $97 on promotion, usually $126 (checked November 2026), each for two adults on the shared tour; one adult pays US$120 (12 November, checked November 2026).

The OceanAir Travel day takes 7 to 8 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off: about an hour at the Pyramids of Giza, 30 minutes at the Sphinx, 15 at the Valley Temple of Khafre, two hours in the museum, and an hour for lunch.

Two hours is a guided highlights visit, not the whole museum. The admission ticket also covers Khufu’s Boats Museum, the shops and the gardens outside (Grand Egyptian Museum, checked November 2026), and a guide on a two-hour visit has to choose. If you want the boats as well as the galleries, or time to wander after the guide has finished, plan on a half day inside.

What fits in two hours, and what needs more

The museum’s guided route gives a fair picture of a two-hour visit: the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs, the Main Galleries and the Tutankhamun Galleries. Those four are where the museum’s own guide spends the time. What that route does not name is the rest of the ticket, Khufu’s Boats Museum among it, and a guided visit leaves little time to go back to what caught your eye.

The museum’s website keeps a selection of must-see objects for visitors short of time, and offers an audio guide in Arabic, English and Japanese with more than 100 stops, which lets you set your own pace without a guide.

Fitting it into one day with the pyramids

Map of the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza pyramids: the Grand Egyptian Museum on the desert road, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, and the drive of 5.5 km by road from the museum to the plateau visitor centre
The museum and the plateau, 5.5 km apart by road from the museum to the plateau visitor centre: close enough for one day.

The museum and the plateau are close: 5.5 km by road from the museum to the plateau visitor centre, about 1.9 km from the museum to the Great Pyramid in a straight line. A day of both is the usual tour plan, and the tours run it in 7 to 8 hours with lunch. Two things decide whether it feels rushed.

  • The order. The OceanAir Travel day does the plateau first and the museum after; so does the Saladino Tours - Egypt day, after lunch. That puts the museum in the warmest part of the day, indoors.
  • The closing time. The galleries close at 18:00 on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday, with the last entry an hour before (Grand Egyptian Museum, checked November 2026). On your own, a Wednesday or Saturday gives you the evening for the museum after a day on the plateau.

If the museum is the main event for you, give it its own half day and see the pyramids on another: the museum and Pyramids tour, or the museum alone? sets out both.
